Apparently lots of modern direct-injection engines are experiencing intake carbon buildup. It's not just VW's 2.0TFSI either. BMW and Mini's have also had lots of this problem. BMW even make a special tool just to clean out the intake to address this problem. Some VW 2.0T owners have reported good results with a good cleaning.
